The Cowboys bet big and early on Ulysses Bentley IV, 117 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The Mafah steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 12 they get a load in the middle. A clean fit for the roster.
Nice patience on Omarion Hampton, who had no business lasting to No. 44. A need, and now a little less of one.
They liked Chris Paul Jr. enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 3 slot. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Antwane Wells Jr. at pick No. 150 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
JJ Pegues in slot 170 is fair value, right on his grade. It fills a real need, too.
They talked themselves into Nazir Stackhouse at the 172nd pick, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Ollie Gordon II in the 174th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The roster fit checks out.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Ulysses Bentley IV this early at pick 190. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Phil Mafah in Round 6, Pick 33 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Trevor Etienne at slot 236 is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A reach on Henry Parrish Jr. in the 249th pick; the board had better options right there. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
