The trade table was where it all came apart. The Cowboys shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. The math is unkind, and the D follows.
They have staked the next five years on Shedeur Sanders, which is the only story that really matters here. If Caldwell pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
They will answer for taking edge rusher early while tight end went begging. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 5 they get a go-to option on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
In pick No. 7 they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Shedeur Sanders in the Round 1 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
In pick 30 they get a three-down runner. A real need, handled.
Mykel Williams at slot 42 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They took Tate Ratledge at par in the 62nd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tory Horton at Round 3, Pick 5. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Danny Stutsman at the 74th pick is the proof. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Dillon Gabriel slipping to the Round 3 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They talked themselves into Jamaree Caldwell at pick 103, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
They bypassed pressing needs at tight end to take Tyler Baron, an edge rusher that was not the priority.
Nothing to complain about; Nicholas Singleton went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Lathan Ransom at slot 158 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. A minor itch, scratched.
Jalen Travis at pick No. 190 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A premium they did not need to pay, Marcus Harris a notch or two before his time. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
