Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Cowboys spent the 134th overall pick on Zion Tupuola-Fetui, a name most had 81 spots down the list. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B+.
The Flournoy pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get protection for the quarterback. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 32nd overall pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Fair-plus on Edgerrin Cooper, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Trey Benson in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They paid up for Maason Smith at the 95th pick when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
You do not let a wide receiver like Javon Baker reach No. 128 and blink. They did not. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Zion Tupuola-Fetui this early at pick 134. A minor itch, scratched.
Kalen King at the 159th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Sione Vaki in the Round 5 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Ty'Ron Hopper in the 216th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
JD Bertrand slipping to No. 233 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Circle this one: Ryan Flournoy at pick No. 244 is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
