Thirty-one other rooms let Jaylin Simpson slide, and the Cowboys were the ones holding the card at Round 6, Pick 41. Highway robbery.
The Watson pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.
So much rides on Michael Penix Jr. that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 17 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get a plug-and-play piece up front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Cooper Beebe at pick 46 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They took Junior Colson at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached a country mile for Trey Benson at the 56th overall pick, and the board is aghast. It fills a real need, too.
DeWayne Carter slid further than he should have, and No. 112 is lovely value for the interior defensive lineman. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Nehemiah Pritchett slipping to slot 153 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Nathaniel Watson well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Fabien Lovett at Round 6, Pick 32 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A straight-up fair deal on Drake Nugent at pick No. 212, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They barely believed it either: Jaylin Simpson still on the board at Round 6, Pick 41. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A conviction pick on Jalen Coker at the 234th overall pick that the board grades a round light. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Austin Reed. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
