The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Cowboys watched Jay Higgins slide 113 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.
They are betting Cook proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The phones were where this weekend was really won.
Javonte Williams gives the group a proven body among the projects. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 20 they get a go-to option on the outside at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
They read the board right and Derrick Harmon was the payoff at No. 44. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid sticker price for TreVeyon Henderson in slot 51, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Darien Porter in pick 76 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Dylan Fairchild in the 85th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Cam Skattebo in Round 5, Pick 11 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
Cody Simon at the 170th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A tight end of that caliber at the Round 5 slot is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Steal is underselling it; Earnest Greene III at pick No. 174 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No drama and no debate, Nazir Stackhouse went about where he belonged in the 190th overall pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They robbed the room for Tommi Hill here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Brady Cook in No. 211 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Taking Jay Higgins in slot 249 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
