Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys cashed the board's mistake on Bassa: C+.

Future A+

This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Jeffrey Bassa, the No. 132 name on the board, stolen at Round 7, Pick 31. It nets out a thoroughly average C+.

Mertz has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

It is not that Burch is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first.

Hit on Josaiah Stewart and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.32 · Pick 32 · Josaiah Stewart · DE-EDGE · rank 53
A real head-scratcher, Josaiah Stewart in the 32nd pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · Omarion Hampton · RB · rank 30
The board fumbled Omarion Hampton all the way to Round 3, Pick 2, and they scooped it up. The roster fit checks out.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Jordan Burch · DE-EDGE · rank 97
A curious use of pick 76. Cornerback and tight end needed the pick; an edge rusher in Jordan Burch did not.
R4.20 · Pick 121 · Billy Bowman Jr. · S · rank 121
Billy Bowman Jr. at No. 121 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R5.11 · Pick 150 · JJ Pegues · DT · rank 188
They talked themselves into JJ Pegues at the 150th overall pick, and the board did not agree. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.31 · Pick 170 · Jared Wilson · C · rank 109
Jared Wilson at pick No. 170 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R5.33 · Pick 172 · Cam Skattebo · RB · rank 105
You do not let a running back like Cam Skattebo reach slot 172 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.35 · Pick 174 · KeAndre Lambert-Smith · WR · rank 194
A wild overpay on KeAndre Lambert-Smith in the Round 5 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.19 · Pick 197 · Smael Mondon Jr. · LB · rank 111
They will replay Smael Mondon Jr. at No. 197 for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R7.31 · Pick 249 · Jeffrey Bassa · LB · rank 132
Somehow Jeffrey Bassa was still sitting there in pick No. 249, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.38 · Pick 256 · Graham Mertz · QB · rank 367
They left a pile of value on the table to take Graham Mertz this early at the Round 7 slot. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
