Dallas Cowboys

More right than wrong for the Cowboys, and a B- to prove it.

Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Cowboys spent slot 153 on Dayon Hayes, a name the board had a full 117 spots lower. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.

That is a linebacker worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.12 · Pick 12 · Kaleb Johnson · RB · rank 39
In No. 12 they get an every-down engine for the run game, a steep price for the projection. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Derrick Harmon · DT · rank 33
A slide stopped in pick No. 44, with Derrick Harmon worth more than the price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Omarr Norman-Lott · DT · rank 76
Omarr Norman-Lott in the 76th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.16 · Pick 153 · Dayon Hayes · DE-EDGE · rank 270
Dayon Hayes in the 153rd overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R5.31 · Pick 168 · Antwane Wells Jr. · WR · rank 178
They paid a round early for Antwane Wells Jr. in Round 5, Pick 31, more than the board wanted. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.33 · Pick 170 · Barrett Carter · LB · rank 82
Barrett Carter at pick 170 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.34 · Pick 171 · Devin Neal · RB · rank 83
Devin Neal at Round 5, Pick 34 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
R6.12 · Pick 187 · Seth McLaughlin · C · rank 207
Value said wait; Seth McLaughlin in pick 187 says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.34 · Pick 209 · Chandler Rivers · CB · rank 188
The board fumbled Chandler Rivers all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R7.31 · Pick 247 · Joey Slackman · DL · rank 280
This one needs a full-page explanation: Joey Slackman in pick No. 247, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
