Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Jaylan Ford at pick No. 173 is 22 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. However the rest shakes out, Cooper Jr. at that price is a win they earned. The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term starter on the line, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zach Frazier. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Trey Benson in No. 87 is fair value, right on his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jaylan Ford. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They went early on Myles Cole in the 213th overall pick, and the value did not follow. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A conviction pick on Logan Lee at pick 231 that the board grades a round light. The roster fit checks out.
The board had Ryan Cooper Jr. higher than slot 242, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
