You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Jake Briningstool in the 174th overall pick.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Smith. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
Walter Nolen in No. 33 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The roster fit checks out.
Nice patience on Nic Scourton, who had no business lasting to pick No. 44. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They barely believed it either: Omarion Hampton still on the board at pick 67. A need, and now a little less of one.
Tate Ratledge in slot 76 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Logan Brown. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid a round early for Dont'e Thornton Jr. in the 170th pick, more than the board wanted. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Brashard Smith at No. 172 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
