Call it larceny. Cam Skattebo sat on the board until the Round 5 slot, and the Cowboys did not need to be asked twice. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Reaching for Sheppard left real value on the table behind him. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 13th overall pick they get a true top target. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They liked Tyleik Williams enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 2 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
TreVeyon Henderson is a better player than Round 3, Pick 14 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
Azareye'h Thomas at pick 148 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Cam Skattebo at the 168th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The roster fit checks out.
They barely believed it either: Chris Paul Jr. still on the board at pick No. 170. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Rod Moore in No. 171 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
DJ Campbell in slot 189 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A big swing on Anthony Belton at slot 209, well ahead of any board in the building. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached into another round for Will Sheppard, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
