The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Cowboys watched BJ Mayes slide 24 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. If Watson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Xavier Legette in pick No. 24 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kiran Amegadjie in No. 56. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Tyler Davis at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
Kris Abrams-Draine in Round 4, Pick 24 lands just on the right side of the ledger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A tidy bit of business in pick 174, where Layden Robinson graded well above the range. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They let Kenny Logan Jr. come to them and pounced at the 212th overall pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A conviction pick on Nathaniel Watson at slot 219 that the board grades a round light. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
BJ Mayes at the 245th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
