You build a draft on nights like this. Xavier Legette had no business being available in No. 56, and the Cowboys did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Every board in the league had Williams lower, and that gap is the story.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th pick they get a building block for the line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Xavier Legette in pick No. 56 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nice patience on Brenden Rice, who had no business lasting to No. 87. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid a round early for James Williams in the 124th overall pick, more than the board wanted. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They did well to land LaDarius Henderson in pick 174, just ahead of his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Curtis Jacobs in slot 212, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
You do not let a running back like Jalen Berger reach the Round 7 slot and blink. They did not. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
