The phones were a trap the Cowboys kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
So much rides on Carson Beck that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. The Peebles pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. That linebacker hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The Davis steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term answer under center at fair value.
A premium they did not need to pay, Deone Walker a notch or two before his time. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Ollie Gordon II at slot 50 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Clay Webb in No. 59. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Value with a capital V on Jonah Savaiinaea in pick 68, a genuine coup. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Dylan Fairchild in pick No. 78 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A slide stopped in Round 3, Pick 26, with Domani Jackson worth more than the price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Patrick Payton at the 110th pick is money in the bank, a edge rusher taken below his worth. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Jack Nelson at No. 117 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A conviction pick on Cashius Howell at the Round 5 slot that the board grades a round light. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Tyler Baron in the 169th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
They reached into another round for Aeneas Peebles, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid sticker price for Oscar Delp in Round 5, Pick 33, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Hunter Wohler slipping to slot 189 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It adds depth where they could use a little.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Damien Martinez. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board fumbled J.C. Davis all the way to pick 223, and they scooped it up. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They jumped the gun on Dorian Strong, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A straight-up fair deal on Jimmy Horn Jr. at No. 239, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
