The Damien Martinez pick is the one that will follow the Cowboys into the fall. They took him 40 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. Too much went sideways, and the D- is the honest tally.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Ransom steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 2 they get a workhorse for the backfield. A real need, handled.
The board had Carson Beck higher than Round 2, Pick 7, and the quarterback fell to them anyway. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Fair-plus on Wyatt Milum, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Deone Walker at No. 45 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
By-the-book stuff, Jalen Milroe at pick 46 squarely in line with his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
A top-tier interior defensive lineman at a bargain, Bear Alexander in the 98th overall pick, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 99, where TJ Ferguson graded well above the range. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Kenneth Grant in Round 4, Pick 16 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid sticker price for Davison Igbinosun in the Round 4 slot, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A big swing on Tonka Hemingway at slot 147, well ahead of any board in the building. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Joshua Gray at No. 148 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Bryce Foster in the 149th pick is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A premium they did not need to pay, Logan Brown a notch or two before his time. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They will replay Jihaad Campbell at the 151st pick for years; that is how good the value is. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They took Nic Anderson at par in slot 152, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached into another round for Cashius Howell, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They paid a round early for Elijah Roberts in Round 5, Pick 31, more than the board wanted. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Tyler Baron. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Trey Moore at the 171st overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
No edge and no loss on Quinn Carroll in No. 188; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Amari Kight. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They liked Zach Rice enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 190. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Damien Martinez at Round 6, Pick 16 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Lathan Ransom in pick No. 206 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Jermari Harris at slot 207 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Somehow Hunter Wohler was still sitting there in the Round 6 slot, and they pounced on premier safety value. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
