The rest of the league had time to spare on Austin Reed; the Cowboys did not wait, grabbing him 30 spots ahead at No. 244. The good and the questionable cancel out to a C.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Dixon. A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 24 they get a sticky cover corner. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
No drama and no debate, Kingsley Suamataia went about where he belonged in Round 2, Pick 24. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jamari Thrash in slot 133 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board fumbled Kitan Oladapo all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Fabien Lovett in pick No. 178 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid a round early for Jaylan Ford in the 196th pick, more than the board wanted. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A big swing on Keaton Bills at the 216th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Johnny Dixon in No. 217, plain and simple. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Donovan Jennings at pick No. 233 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Austin Reed in the Round 7 slot, miles early. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
