Call it larceny. Tahj Washington sat on the board until No. 231, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice.
They are betting Travis proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Patrick Paul at the 68th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Devontez Walker in pick No. 103, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jordan Travis in slot 137, miles early. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Taking Christian Jones in pick 157 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
Somehow Dwight McGlothern was still sitting there in Round 6, Pick 5, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They went early on Erick All in the Round 6 slot, and the value did not follow. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They robbed the room for Tahj Washington here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
