There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Patriots started one anyway for Blake Watson, 48 picks ahead of schedule.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. On value alone, Hadden makes the weekend a net positive.
Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 6 they get a No. 1 receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
They paid sticker price for Jordan Morgan in the 34th overall pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Good price on J.J. McCarthy in the Round 2 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They took Patrick Paul at par in Round 3, Pick 4, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
They did well to land Jalen McMillan in No. 104, just ahead of his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Theo Johnson at pick No. 136 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Nelson Ceaser in pick No. 140 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They let Kamal Hadden come to them and pounced at Round 6, Pick 7. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A real head-scratcher, Blake Watson in the 229th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
