When a board-topper like Keon Coleman slides to No. 95, you do not overthink it, and the Patriots did not. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
The whole projection now runs through Jayden Daniels; hit there and everything else looks smarter. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
They will answer for taking cornerback early while edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots went begging. Reaching for Paul left real value on the table behind him.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 6 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
Patrick Paul at the Round 2 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ja'Lynn Polk. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reach for Xavier Legette in pick 66; a little patience would have been rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
You do not let a cornerback like T.J. Tampa reach pick No. 80 and blink. They did not. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They will replay Keon Coleman at the 95th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went cornerback with Khyree Jackson while clear needs at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots sat open.
Steal is underselling it; Bucky Irving at slot 116 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Kitan Oladapo. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Roger Rosengarten in Round 5, Pick 4 is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They barely believed it either: Dylan Laube still on the board at the Round 5 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Malik Mustapha in No. 185, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
