The rest of the league will want that one back. Damien Martinez tumbling to the Patriots in pick No. 217 is a gift they did not have to think twice about.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for James Pearce Jr. in pick 8, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the offensive line. A clean fit for the roster.
No drama and no debate, Tate Ratledge went about where he belonged in pick No. 69. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They did well to land Maxwell Hairston in slot 77, just ahead of his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They barely believed it either: Kevin Winston Jr. still on the board at No. 144. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board fumbled Damien Martinez all the way to Round 7, Pick 1, and they scooped it up. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A linebacker of that caliber at the 220th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They robbed the room for Trevor Etienne here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A need, and now a little less of one.
