This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Lathan Ransom, the No. 110 name on the board, stolen at the 145th pick. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. If Simpkins III pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 4 they get a blindside protector at fair value. A real need, handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Matthew Golden at slot 38, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They let Zy Alexander come to them and pounced at the 69th overall pick. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They paid sticker price for Barrett Carter in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Steal is underselling it; Devin Neal at Round 4, Pick 4 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Lathan Ransom at No. 145 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board fumbled JJ Pegues all the way to pick No. 219, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Brant Kuithe at the 222nd pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Torricelli Simpkins III at pick No. 240 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A need, and now a little less of one.
