Somewhere a general manager is explaining how LeQuint Allen got past him. The Patriots do not have to explain a thing at the 219th overall pick.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Will Campbell in the 4th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Tyler Warren at the Round 2 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Nice patience on Alfred Collins, who had no business lasting to Round 3, Pick 5. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Value with a capital V on Demetrius Knight Jr. in No. 77, a genuine coup. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tez Johnson at pick 105. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
You do not let a safety like Malachi Moore reach the 145th pick and blink. They did not. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
LeQuint Allen in pick No. 219 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Hayden Conner slid further than he should have, and slot 222 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. It fills a real need, too.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Mac McWilliams in No. 240. A minor need, but a need all the same.
