Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Jake Majors, the No. 102 name on the board, should have been long gone before slot 139. The sum of the weekend is a deserved A-.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Every board in the league had Trapilo lower, and that gap is the story. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
It is a haul that will look even better come September.
Pick-by-Pick
The board fumbled Nick Emmanwori all the way to the 38th overall pick, and they scooped it up. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Nice patience on Elic Ayomanor, who had no business lasting to the Round 3 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Ozzy Trapilo at pick No. 76 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Maxwell Hairston at the 77th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Cam Skattebo in Round 4, Pick 4 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Circle this one: Jake Majors at No. 139 is a fall that decides a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Steal is underselling it; Darius Alexander at slot 144 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They robbed the room for Luke Lachey here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A need, and now a little less of one.
Taking Jack Kiser in No. 220 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They will replay Trevor Etienne at slot 238 for years; that is how good the value is. The roster fit checks out.
