The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Jaylen Reed, the No. 188 name on the board, in No. 240. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a mismatch in the passing game, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
Cameron Williams at the 38th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Fair-plus on Xavier Restrepo, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Baron at slot 77, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They barely believed it either: Mason Taylor still on the board at No. 105. The roster fit checks out.
Cam Skattebo at the 145th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
Tommi Hill at the Round 5 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Quincy Riley in pick 219 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
A wide receiver of that caliber at the 222nd overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They will replay Jaylen Reed at Round 7, Pick 22 for years; that is how good the value is. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
