Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Malachi Fields got past him. The Jets do not have to explain a thing at pick 103. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B-.
The cost of the Kamara reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
They will regret leaving safety for another day if the season turns on it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but safety.
Pick-by-Pick
Arvell Reese in Round 1, Pick 9 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
In the Round 1 slot they get a workhorse for the backfield, outstanding value to boot.
Kenyon Sadiq at the 29th pick is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They read the board right and Christen Miller was the payoff at Round 2, Pick 12. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Steal is underselling it; Malachi Fields at slot 103 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Mikail Kamara at pick No. 116 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A premium they did not need to pay, Drew Allar a notch or two before his time. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Matt Gulbin at the Round 5 slot, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
TJ Hall at pick 228 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Fair-plus on Fa'alili Fa'amoe, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
