The rest of the league had time to spare on Darius Robinson; the Packers did not wait, grabbing him 30 spots ahead at pick No. 91. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Mayes. The Bishop pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback, wide receiver and other spots.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 27 they get a rangy last line of defense. More want than need.
They paid a round early for Edgerrin Cooper in the 41st pick, more than the board wanted. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Christian Mahogany. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Mike Sainristil at the Round 3 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A clean, defensible pick in Round 3, Pick 27 with a little surplus value in Braden Fiske. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Darius Robinson well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A surprising call. With quarterback, wide receiver and other spots still to address, they spent the Round 4 slot on Cole Bishop, a safety they were not short of.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 133 on Cedric Gray with quarterback, wide receiver and other spots unsolved.
A slide stopped in slot 135, with Kris Abrams-Draine worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Omar Speights. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
A premium they did not need to pay, Blake Watson a notch or two before his time. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They did well to land Jalen Green in the 219th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
BJ Mayes slid further than he should have, and pick No. 246 is lovely value for the cornerback. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
