The Commanders went off the board in a big way for Theo Johnson, 48 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another.
The Eichenberg pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher and interior defensive lineman. Landing Sainristil that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 3 they get a difference-maker at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Troy Fautanu at the Round 2 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid sticker price for Tyler Guyton in pick No. 36, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Edgerrin Cooper at the 40th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Michael Pratt in Round 3, Pick 3, miles early. The roster fit checks out.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending slot 100 on Tommy Eichenberg with edge rusher and interior defensive lineman unsolved.
Theo Johnson at slot 102 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
You do not let a cornerback like Mike Sainristil reach pick 103 and blink. They did not. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid a round early for Jaylen Wright in pick No. 141, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A big swing on Jared Wiley at the 181st overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Tatum Bethune at No. 223 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
