Los Angeles Chargers

The steal of the weekend belongs to the Chargers and Corley: A.

The value of the weekend has a name and a slot: Malachi Corley, pick No. 111, roughly 32 picks past where he belonged.

The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up.

The Chargers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.

A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.20 · Pick 20 · Jer'Zhan Newton · DL · rank 12
In the 20th pick they get a disruptive interior force at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Bralen Trice · DE-EDGE · rank 37
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bralen Trice. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.11 · Pick 43 · Brian Thomas Jr. · WR · rank 27
The board had Brian Thomas Jr. higher than Round 2, Pick 11, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.6 · Pick 70 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 58
Value with a capital V on Edgerrin Cooper in pick 70, a genuine coup. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 78
Cooper Beebe at pick No. 88 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.31 · Pick 94 · McKinnley Jackson · DL · rank 88
McKinnley Jackson in No. 94 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.11 · Pick 111 · Malachi Corley · WR · rank 79
Malachi Corley at slot 111 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.19 · Pick 119 · Ray Davis · RB · rank 109
Nice patience on Ray Davis, who had no business lasting to the 119th overall pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R5.6 · Pick 142 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 127
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tommy Eichenberg in No. 142. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R5.25 · Pick 161 · Cedric Johnson · DE-EDGE · rank 160
Cedric Johnson in pick No. 161 is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
