You can hear the double-takes from here. The Bears took Xavier Truss at No. 257, roughly 52 spots before his name belonged.
The Ransaw value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. The veteran additions, Micah Parsons chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.
Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.
Pick-by-Pick
They let Malaki Starks come to them and pounced at pick 40. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A reach for Ozzy Trapilo in Round 3, Pick 8; a little patience would have been rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Jayden Higgins at the Round 3 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Smael Mondon Jr. in pick No. 113 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Joshua Farmer in slot 133 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Bhayshul Tuten at the 148th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board fumbled Damien Martinez all the way to the 171st overall pick, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board had cheaper options than Teddye Buchanan at No. 233, and it noticed. It fills a real need, too.
John Williams in slot 240 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They robbed the room for Caleb Ransaw here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Jalen Travis at pick 252 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
They reached into another round for Xavier Truss, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
