You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Packers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The board sounded every alarm, and the F is the fallout.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. Spending an early pick on safety with quarterback, running back and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
They will need Hicks to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with quarterback still staring back at them.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a centerfielder for the defense at fair value. More want than need.
Tyler Guyton in pick 36 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Brian Thomas Jr. in the 40th pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jackson Powers-Johnson a notch or two before his time. The roster fit checks out.
T.J. Tampa slipping to Round 2, Pick 18 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No drama and no debate, Edgerrin Cooper went about where he belonged in pick No. 54. A minor itch, scratched.
Chris Braswell at slot 57 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, running back and other spots to take Jaden Hicks, a safety that was not the priority.
