The phones were a trap the Cowboys kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal.
So much rides on Caleb Williams that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. Reaching for Jackson left real value on the table behind him. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
That Murphy pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 8 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick No. 24 they get a plug-and-play piece up front at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Devontez Walker in the 43rd pick is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Junior Colson in slot 60 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They reached a country mile for Khyree Jackson at pick 87, and the board is aghast. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They barely believed it either: Jonathon Brooks still on the board at the 99th overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jaylen Wright at No. 173. It fills a real need, too.
Grayson Murphy at the Round 6 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A minor itch, scratched.
