The Cowboys lost the trade table, and the D+ tells the story.

The Cowboys did not so much draft Myles Cole as overpay for him, 37 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Landing Watts that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.

In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.24 · Pick 24 · JC Latham · OT · rank 18
In the 24th overall pick they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.28 · Pick 60 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 56
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 2 slot with a little surplus value in Edgerrin Cooper. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Spencer Rattler · QB · rank 90
Spencer Rattler in Round 3, Pick 24 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.36 · Pick 99 · Bucky Irving · RB · rank 92
They did well to land Bucky Irving in the 99th pick, just ahead of his grade. It fills a real need, too.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 159
Braelon Allen at slot 125 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.13 · Pick 149 · Ty'Ron Hopper · LB · rank 157
A reach for Ty'Ron Hopper in No. 149; a little patience would have been rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.31 · Pick 167 · Layden Robinson · OG · rank 173
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Layden Robinson. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.37 · Pick 173 · Chau Smith-Wade · CB · rank 168
Good price on Chau Smith-Wade in the Round 5 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R6.38 · Pick 213 · Isaiah Williams · WR · rank 209
Fair-plus on Isaiah Williams, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.22 · Pick 242 · Myles Cole · DE-EDGE · rank 279
A real head-scratcher, Myles Cole in the 242nd overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A minor itch, scratched.
R7.26 · Pick 246 · Ryan Watts · CB · rank 225
Taking Ryan Watts in Round 7, Pick 26 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
