The board owed the Cowboys one, and it paid up: Donovan Edwards, the No. 186 name on the board, sitting there at the Round 7 slot like a gift left on the doorstep.
The James reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 17th pick they get a centerpiece for the ground game, outstanding value to boot.
Jalon Walker at pick No. 44 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A tidy little value on T.J. Sanders in pick 49, a step better than break-even. It fills a real need, too.
Elic Ayomanor at slot 76 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Value with a capital V on Lathan Ransom in No. 119, a genuine coup. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They will replay Darius Alexander at the 149th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jeffrey Bassa in Round 5, Pick 32 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A quarterback of that caliber at the Round 5 slot is the definition of value, full stop. The roster fit checks out.
Shemar James at the 174th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid a round early for Simeon Barrow Jr. in No. 188, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A wild overpay on John Williams in pick No. 211, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Donovan Edwards in pick 247 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
