Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys robbed the room for Johnson. Final grade: D.

The phones were a trap the Cowboys kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. A D that will need time and luck to look better.

The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Getting Johnson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. Adding Baker Mayfield by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies.

The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and cornerback is still a hole.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.24 · Pick 24 · Troy Fautanu · OT · rank 22
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R1.26 · Pick 26 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 32
In slot 26 they get a building block for the line at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.24 · Pick 56 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 52
Junior Colson at Round 2, Pick 24 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Javon Bullard · S · rank 42
Javon Bullard slipping to the 57th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A minor itch, scratched.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 87
They took Trey Benson at par in pick No. 88, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
R3.26 · Pick 89 · Dominick Puni · OT · rank 88
Dominick Puni in pick 89 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.33 · Pick 96 · Javon Baker · WR · rank 90
Nothing to complain about; Javon Baker went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Tyler Davis · DT · rank 120
Tyler Davis in No. 125 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The roster fit checks out.
R5.33 · Pick 169 · Marist Liufau · LB · rank 164
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 169 with a little surplus value in Marist Liufau. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.38 · Pick 174 · Dylan Laube · RB · rank 157
Dylan Laube in the 174th pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.5 · Pick 225 · Cornelius Johnson · WR · rank 186
Circle this one: Cornelius Johnson at the 225th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
