The tape said wait; the Cowboys did not. Isaac TeSlaa went at Round 7, Pick 32, a good 127 picks before the board was ready. The math is unkind, and the D+ follows.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. That Skattebo pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, cornerback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 10th pick they get a No. 1 receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
The board had Ashton Jeanty higher than the Round 1 slot, and the running back fell to them anyway. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A quiet steal in Round 2, Pick 7: Jalon Walker for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and T.J. Sanders at No. 41 is the proof. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid up for Dylan Fairchild at the 44th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Quinn Ewers at pick 76 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Circle this one: Mason Taylor at the 148th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
You do not let a running back like Cam Skattebo reach pick No. 170 and blink. They did not. The roster fit checks out.
Taking DeMonte Capehart in slot 173 is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nice patience on Seth McLaughlin, who had no business lasting to No. 209. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
