Dallas Cowboys

Some hits, some head-scratchers, and a C+ for the Cowboys.

When the story of this class is written, it opens with Trey Moore at pick 190, a reach of 103 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.

The Leonard steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The veteran additions, Trey Smith chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.

If Tyler Warren and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.30 · Pick 30 · Mike Green · DE-EDGE · rank 27
Nothing to complain about; Mike Green went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R1.31 · Pick 31 · Tyler Warren · TE · rank 14
They read the board right and Tyler Warren was the payoff at pick No. 31. The roster fit checks out.
R2.21 · Pick 53 · Darien Porter · CB · rank 80
They reached into another round for Darien Porter, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.24 · Pick 56 · Omarion Hampton · RB · rank 30
They robbed the room for Omarion Hampton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R2.30 · Pick 62 · Andrew Mukuba · S · rank 69
No edge and no loss on Andrew Mukuba in the 62nd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · Zy Alexander · CB · rank 59
A reasonable price with a little left over, Zy Alexander in the Round 3 slot. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Savion Williams · WR · rank 98
Savion Williams at slot 76 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.20 · Pick 84 · Jordan Phillips · DT · rank 112
Jordan Phillips at the Round 3 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.15 · Pick 116 · Smael Mondon Jr. · LB · rank 111
A clean, defensible pick in the 116th overall pick with a little surplus value in Smael Mondon Jr.. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.30 · Pick 131 · Jack Nelson · OT · rank 130
They paid sticker price for Jack Nelson in Round 4, Pick 30, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.37 · Pick 138 · Cam Skattebo · RB · rank 105
Circle this one: Cam Skattebo at pick No. 138 is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.38 · Pick 139 · Emery Jones Jr. · OT · rank 128
A slide stopped in the 139th pick, with Emery Jones Jr. worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.11 · Pick 150 · Riley Leonard · QB · rank 106
The board fumbled Riley Leonard all the way to No. 150, and they scooped it up. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.31 · Pick 170 · Cody Simon · LB · rank 136
Cody Simon at pick 170 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.32 · Pick 171 · Simeon Barrow Jr. · DL · rank 180
Simeon Barrow Jr. in Round 5, Pick 32 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.33 · Pick 172 · Damien Martinez · RB · rank 162
Damien Martinez in slot 172 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.12 · Pick 190 · Trey Moore · LB-EDGE · rank 293
They left a pile of value on the table to take Trey Moore this early at the Round 6 slot. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
R7.19 · Pick 237 · Barryn Sorrell · LB-EDGE · rank 328
They reached a country mile for Barryn Sorrell at pick 237, and the board is aghast. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
