You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Rasheen Ali in pick 174. Put together, it is a D.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Everything downstream of Jayden Daniels depends on Jayden Daniels, and the building knows it. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The Jones value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 8th pick they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get a go-to option on the outside, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They jumped the gun on Jonathon Brooks, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A need, and now a little less of one.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Payton Wilson. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Matt Goncalves this early at pick 87. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A clean, defensible pick in slot 109 with a little surplus value in Tykee Smith. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They talked themselves into Nehemiah Pritchett at the Round 4 slot, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Beaux Limmer in pick 128 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Keith Randolph Jr. in the 145th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Theo Wease Jr. at slot 171 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Rasheen Ali. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Christian Jones at Round 6, Pick 37 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board had Myles Jones higher than No. 245, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
