The Cowboys lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. The math is unkind, and the D follows.
Whatever Jayden Daniels becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. Spending an early pick on DT-EDGE with tight end and interior defensive lineman open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Jordan has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Bywater.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 8 they get their quarterback of the future at fair value.
In pick No. 24 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Jonathon Brooks at the 56th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A need, and now a little less of one.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Junior Colson. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE and leaves tight end and interior defensive lineman untouched.
No drama and no debate, Khyree Jackson went about where he belonged in Round 4, Pick 5. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Fair-plus on Blake Fisher, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They took Darius Robinson at par in the Round 4 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and James Williams at slot 145 is the proof. A minor itch, scratched.
Delmar Glaze at pick 174 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid sticker price for Theo Wease Jr. in the 186th overall pick, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid up for Jawhar Jordan at the Round 6 slot when waiting would have done the job. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Ben Bywater in No. 226. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Myles Jones at Round 7, Pick 12 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They jumped the gun on Phil Jurkovec, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
