Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Chiefs spent the 118th overall pick on Frank Gore Jr., a name most had 106 spots down the list.
They will answer for taking OLB-EDGE early while tight end, quarterback and other spots went begging. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The verdict is a shrug for now, with the swing picks left to write the real ending.
Pick-by-Pick
A big swing on Luke McCaffrey at the 64th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Javon Solomon adds an OLB-EDGE and leaves tight end, quarterback and other spots untouched.
Frank Gore Jr. at pick No. 118 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Elijah Jones at No. 133 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 150 with a little surplus value in Tykee Smith. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They paid sticker price for Trevor Keegan in Round 5, Pick 22, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
