This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Dylan Sampson, the No. 42 name on the board, stolen at the 150th overall pick. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
They are betting Uiagalelei proves the room right and everyone else wrong. For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick-by-Pick
Walter Nolen at slot 19 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Tyler Booker in Round 2, Pick 12. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Tyler Warren in pick No. 51 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Malaki Starks in the 78th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Dylan Sampson at No. 150 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. The roster fit checks out.
Harold Perkins Jr. at the Round 5 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
You do not let a linebacker like Deontae Lawson reach pick 170 and blink. They did not. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid up for Elijah Roberts at the 171st overall pick when waiting would have done the job. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A real head-scratcher, DJ Uiagalelei in the 190th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Germie Bernard in pick No. 221 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
