The Cowboys treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the Round 6 slot on Ja'Had Carter a full 48 spots early. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The Nix pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
Xavier Legette in the 26th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Nice patience on Bo Nix, who had no business lasting to slot 35. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
No edge and no loss on Xavier Worthy in No. 45; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A tidy little value on Patrick Paul in the Round 2 slot, a step better than break-even. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
By-the-book stuff, Sedrick Van Pran at pick 87 squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Audric Estime in No. 95 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A premium they did not need to pay, Darius Robinson a notch or two before his time. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Nothing to complain about; Cedric Gray went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A conviction pick on Braelon Allen at the Round 5 slot that the board grades a round light. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Michael Barrett at the 174th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jawhar Jordan in the 186th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fills a real need, too.
Ja'Had Carter at slot 192 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Myles Jones slid further than he should have, and pick No. 212 is lovely value for the cornerback. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They talked themselves into DeMonte Capehart at Round 7, Pick 14, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No drama and no debate, Dwight McGlothern went about where he belonged in the 245th overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
