Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D+.

Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Cowboys spent No. 150 on Donovan Smith, a name most had 97 spots down the list.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The Jackson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end.

The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.6 · Pick 6 · Mason Graham · DT · rank 4
In pick 6 they get a wrecking ball inside. A real need, handled.
R1.12 · Pick 12 · Abdul Carter · DE-EDGE · rank 3
In pick No. 12 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, outstanding value to boot. Need was not the driver here.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Malaki Starks · S · rank 26
Malaki Starks slipping to slot 37 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Cameron Williams · OT · rank 37
Fair-plus on Cameron Williams, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.9 · Pick 73 · TreVeyon Henderson · RB · rank 55
They barely believed it either: TreVeyon Henderson still on the board at the Round 3 slot. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Trey Amos · CB · rank 50
They robbed the room for Trey Amos here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.16 · Pick 80 · Tre Harris · WR · rank 48
Tre Harris in pick 80 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.4 · Pick 105 · Devin Neal · RB · rank 84
A running back of that caliber at the 105th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.10 · Pick 111 · Smael Mondon Jr. · LB · rank 111
Smael Mondon Jr. at the 111th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.3 · Pick 142 · Donovan Jackson · OT · rank 86
Steal is underselling it; Donovan Jackson at pick No. 142 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.11 · Pick 150 · Donovan Smith · QB · rank 247
A real head-scratcher, Donovan Smith in Round 5, Pick 11 is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.12 · Pick 190 · CJ West · DT · rank 217
CJ West in No. 190 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
