There is reaching, and then there is Barryn Sorrell at No. 211. The Cowboys jumped the board by 104 and dared it to prove them wrong. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
They banked enough surplus on Stout to cover a lot of smaller sins. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
The trade work was a quiet net positive.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 17th overall pick they get protection for the quarterback, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They paid a round early for TreVeyon Henderson in No. 44, more than the board wanted. A need, and now a little less of one.
Elic Ayomanor at the 49th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Deone Walker slipping to pick No. 76 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A market-rate quarterback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kyle McCord. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
O'Donnell Fortune in Round 5, Pick 11 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Ajani Cornelius in pick 170. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Kobe King in Round 5, Pick 35 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reach on Alijah Huzzie in the Round 6 slot; the board had better options right there. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They reached into another round for Barryn Sorrell, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A safety of that caliber at the 238th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Tonka Hemingway at pick No. 249 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
