When the story of this class is written, it opens with Charles Turner III at the Round 7 slot, a reach of 42 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. Put together, it is a D-.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at cornerback, quarterback and other spots.
The Hopper pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, cornerback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th pick they get a cornerstone up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
Payton Wilson at pick No. 56 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Keon Coleman at the Round 2 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Trey Benson at slot 87 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 3, Pick 26 on Maason Smith with cornerback, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
They talked themselves into Justin Eboigbe at No. 124, and the board did not agree. A minor itch, scratched.
Jaylan Ford in pick No. 173 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Circle this one: Ty'Ron Hopper at the 216th pick is a fall that decides a draft. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reach on Logan Lee in No. 233; the board had better options right there. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A big swing on Charles Turner III at Round 7, Pick 24, well ahead of any board in the building. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
