Somebody took the Cowboys to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it.
The Smith pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end and interior defensive lineman still on the board. Reaching for Gentry left real value on the table behind him.
The Prather steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
Hit on Adonai Mitchell and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 24 they get a difference-maker at receiver, though they paid up to get him. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They paid a round early for Jonathon Brooks in the 57th overall pick, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 87 on Maason Smith with tight end and interior defensive lineman unsolved.
They liked Khyree Jackson enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 103. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A tidy little value on Michael Pratt in pick 112, a step better than break-even. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No drama and no debate, Sataoa Laumea went about where he belonged in Round 4, Pick 24. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Keith Randolph Jr. in the Round 5 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
No edge and no loss on Delmar Glaze in the 174th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Nothing to complain about; Jaylan Ford went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They did well to land Josh Proctor in the 206th pick, just ahead of his grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Rasheen Ali at the 212th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. A need, and now a little less of one.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Kaden Prather in No. 224, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Eric Gentry. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
