Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Cowboys spent No. 244 on Taulia Tagovailoa, a name the board had a full 43 spots lower. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
No drama and no debate, Tyler Guyton went about where he belonged in No. 24. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reach on T'Vondre Sweat in pick No. 27; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A wild overpay on Sedrick Van Pran in pick 56, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Brenden Rice at the 87th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A real head-scratcher, Braelon Allen in Round 3, Pick 27 is miles ahead of his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jaylan Ford in slot 174 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A conviction pick on Frank Gore Jr. at No. 216 that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Marcellas Dial in the 233rd overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
