The Cowboys did not so much draft R.J. Oben as overpay for him, 179 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
The Reed pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a featured back, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
Steal is underselling it; Jalon Walker at the 44th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Alfred Collins in pick No. 76 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Dont'e Thornton Jr. this early at No. 148. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Theo Wease Jr. in the 168th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They reached into another round for Quinn Carroll, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Value said wait; R.J. Oben in Round 5, Pick 34 says they were not listening. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A real head-scratcher, Logan Parr in slot 187 is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jason Henderson at pick 209 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Jaylen Reed in No. 247, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
