This is the pick they will still be bragging about in July: Devin Neal, the No. 81 name on the board, stolen at slot 170.

Every board in the league had Medrano lower, and that gap is the story. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.12 · Pick 12 · Will Campbell · OT · rank 11
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.21 · Pick 53 · Omarion Hampton · RB · rank 31
They will replay Omarion Hampton at pick No. 53 for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Deone Walker · DT · rank 64
A slide stopped in No. 76, with Deone Walker worth more than the price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.20 · Pick 84 · Jared Ivey · DE-EDGE · rank 77
Jared Ivey in pick 84 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R5.11 · Pick 150 · Emery Jones Jr. · OT · rank 124
Emery Jones Jr. at slot 150 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.31 · Pick 170 · Devin Neal · RB · rank 81
Devin Neal at the Round 5 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.33 · Pick 172 · Mello Dotson · CB · rank 132
The board fumbled Mello Dotson all the way to the 172nd overall pick, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.35 · Pick 174 · Jack Kiser · LB · rank 197
They reached a country mile for Jack Kiser at the 174th pick, and the board is aghast. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.12 · Pick 190 · Jay Higgins · LB · rank 182
Jay Higgins at pick 190 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.33 · Pick 211 · JJ Pegues · DT · rank 176
Somehow JJ Pegues was still sitting there in slot 211, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. It fills a real need, too.
R7.19 · Pick 237 · Kain Medrano · LB · rank 310
A wild overpay on Kain Medrano in the 237th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.31 · Pick 249 · Dont'e Thornton Jr. · WR · rank 174
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in the 249th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
