Dallas Cowboys

Giddens should have been long gone. The Cowboys pounced, and earned a B+.

The Cowboys spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: DJ Giddens, the No. 176 name on the board, in the 211th pick. It nets out to a B+, which feels about right.

They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. They will need Kiser to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.

They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.14 · Pick 14 · Malaki Starks · S · rank 26
In Round 1, Pick 14 they get a downhill hitter at safety, reach and all.
R2.23 · Pick 55 · Kaleb Johnson · RB · rank 41
Kaleb Johnson is a better player than the 55th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Jack Bech · WR · rank 71
Jack Bech at pick No. 76 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.16 · Pick 80 · Ozzy Trapilo · OT · rank 92
They liked Ozzy Trapilo enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 80. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.22 · Pick 86 · Savion Williams · WR · rank 98
They paid up for Savion Williams at the 86th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.11 · Pick 150 · Mello Dotson · CB · rank 140
Nice patience on Mello Dotson, who had no business lasting to No. 150. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.13 · Pick 152 · Darius Alexander · DT · rank 131
They will replay Darius Alexander at the Round 5 slot for years; that is how good the value is. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.31 · Pick 170 · Tyler Shough · QB · rank 153
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Tyler Shough at slot 170 is the proof. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.33 · Pick 172 · Chase Lundt · OT · rank 173
No drama and no debate, Chase Lundt went about where he belonged in pick No. 172. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.35 · Pick 174 · Jack Kiser · LB · rank 203
Jack Kiser at the 174th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.12 · Pick 190 · Ollie Gordon II · RB · rank 175
They let Ollie Gordon II come to them and pounced at pick 190. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R6.33 · Pick 211 · DJ Giddens · RB · rank 176
Taking DJ Giddens in the 211th pick is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R7.31 · Pick 249 · Brandon Adams · CB · rank 252
They paid sticker price for Brandon Adams in Round 7, Pick 31, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
