Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Xavier Restrepo, the No. 23 name on the board, should have been long gone before No. 233. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Leaving linebacker unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Adding Rachaad White by trade rounds out the weekend beyond the rookies. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Hit on Travis Hunter and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.7
· Pick 7
· Ashton Jeanty
· RB
· rank 2
In pick 7 they get a workhorse for the backfield. A clean fit for the roster.
R1.15
· Pick 15
· Travis Hunter
· CB
· rank 1
In the Round 1 slot they get a ballhawk on the outside, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.12
· Pick 44
· Cam Ward
· QB
· rank 5
They will replay Cam Ward at No. 44 for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.15
· Pick 116
· Wyatt Milum
· OT
· rank 9
Circle this one: Wyatt Milum at the 116th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.13
· Pick 151
· Walter Nolen
· DT
· rank 12
They robbed the room for Walter Nolen here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.14
· Pick 152
· Jake Majors
· C
· rank 66
Jake Majors at Round 5, Pick 14 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.31
· Pick 169
· Josaiah Stewart
· DE-EDGE
· rank 29
Josaiah Stewart in the 169th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R5.32
· Pick 170
· T.J. Sanders
· DT
· rank 38
A interior defensive lineman of that caliber at pick No. 170 is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R5.34
· Pick 172
· Kyle Kennard
· DE-EDGE
· rank 85
Steal is underselling it; Kyle Kennard at the 172nd pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R6.13
· Pick 188
· Riley Mahlman
· OT
· rank 103
You do not let an offensive lineman like Riley Mahlman reach pick 188 and blink. They did not. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.34
· Pick 209
· Tre Harris
· WR
· rank 10
Tre Harris in the 209th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.19
· Pick 233
· Xavier Restrepo
· WR
· rank 23
The board fumbled Xavier Restrepo all the way to No. 233, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
