There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took Sam Hartman a full 41 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They will answer for taking OLB-EDGE early while linebacker and interior defensive lineman went begging. The linebacker spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
On value alone, Coleman makes the weekend a net positive.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
Jackson Powers-Johnson in slot 24 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
In No. 27 they get protection for the quarterback. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Somehow Keon Coleman was still sitting there in pick 56, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Braelon Allen at Round 3, Pick 24 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick No. 90 on Javon Solomon with linebacker and interior defensive lineman unsolved.
Luke McCaffrey at the Round 5 slot is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Daequan Hardy in the 213th overall pick, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid sticker price for Trey Knox in slot 231, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Sam Hartman in Round 7, Pick 22, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
